This magnificent trio from the Rattanakosin period (19th to early 20th century CE) exemplifies Thailand’s rich artistic heritage. At the center, the Buddha stands atop a grand tiered octagonal pedestal, radiating serenity as he raises one hand in the abhaya mudra, a gesture of fearlessness. His kasaya robes, adorned with raised rosette patterns, add texture and elegance. Above, a detachable parasol—a symbol of divine protection—features three wooden discs with brass openwork panels, inlaid with mirrored glass and crowned with a wooden finial.
Flanking the Buddha, two monks stand in reverence, hands pressed together in anjali mudra. Their robes, echoing the Buddha’s in opulence, contrast with their lack of an ushnisha, marking their unenlightened status. Each figure is enriched with glass-enamel eyes, lending lifelike depth to their tranquil expressions. A striking ensemble of spiritual devotion and masterful craftsmanship.
Size of buddha + parasol: 15" W x 67" H (38.1 cm x 170.2 cm); monks: 10" W x 35.5" H (25.4 cm x 90.2 cm); gold quality: 4% to 5.7%
