Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Teotihuacan, ca. 400 to 650 CE. Wow! An adorable pair of classic sculpted ceramic artifacts from one of the most important polities in ancient Mesoamerica. The first is a standing figure with an impressive headdress that includes a long-bodied serpent hanging from its top to the figure's shoulder. Two paws wrap around the front of the headdress, and the figure wearing it has an equally impressive bobbed coiffure supporting it. The figure also wears a necklace composed of several colorful plaques. The second figure is shown in a lifelike seated posture, with legs partially curled under the body, one hand resting on the lower knee, the other resting on the chin. This figure wears a similar necklace to the first, and a small headdress over a similar hairstyle. Both have simple, abstract faces, with indented eyes and mouths and large, straight noses. Bright pigment remains on both their surfaces. Size of the standing figure: 1" W x 2" H (2.5 cm x 5.1 cm)
Anthropomorphic terracotta figures like these have been found throughout all areas of the massive city Teotihuacan. Indeed, early accounts of the rediscovery of the city in the 1800s describe thousands of small clay heads throughout the landscape. The earliest were hand-made, often found with the fingerprints of their creators. It is rare to find ones that are not fragmentary!

Condition
Standing one has been repaired at neck and on headdress. The seated one has possibly been repaired at the neck, but if so, it is so well done as to be almost invisible.
