Pre-Columbian, Hispaniola, Greater Antilles Islands, Taino/ Arawak Indians, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A gorgeous ceremonial scepter of abstract form featuring an expressive zemi deity head emanating from the back of a bird's head. Hand-carved from olive-green stone with dark veining, the scepter features a gently tapered handle with incredibly smooth surfaces that is surmounted by the avian body, its wings bearing intricately incised spiraling and triangular motifs. The avian creature stares forward with enormous, concave eyes above a petite beak, and the zemi head behind it exhibits a furrowed brow, protruding jaw, and a large forehead lined with incised stippling. The excellent surface condition suggests that this tool was perhaps intended as a votive burial offering rather than a religious implement for the living. Size: 2.75" L x 1.7" W x 11.7" H (7 cm x 4.3 cm x 29.7 cm)
Taino art is comprised of many cult objects associated with the worship of "zemis." The term zemi refers to deities, ancestors, or earth spirits. These zemis are believed to be inhabited by powerful spirits. Zemis are understood as objects of concentrated power with the ability to impact their owners both positively and negatively, thought to affect fertility and productivity as well as social and political activities.
