Ancient Near East, Northern Syria, Syro-Hittite culture, ca. 1500 BCE. An interesting figure hand-built from red-orange pottery and featuring intricate detailing. The figure stands upon broad feet and fused legs with a vertical delineation cleft and has a corseted waistline, a flat chest with a trio of impressed circles surrounded with stippling, one arm placed atop a thigh, and the other balancing a large jar atop the head. The abstract countenance presents with petite circular eyes, a prominent nose, tab-shaped ears, and incised rings around the neck, all beneath a tall, tapered headdress adorned with additional incised striations. Thick traces of white pigment suggest this figure was at one time painted with bright pigmentation. A fine example of Syro-Hittite figurative artistry! Size: 2.625" W x 6.9" H (6.7 cm x 17.5 cm); 7.6" H (19.3 cm) on included custom stand.
