Latin America, Mexico, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A stunning festival mask made from high quality 88% silver but painted - the surface presents like aged leather. The molded features are exaggerated and grotesque, with repousse and hammered features: mustache, open mouth with vampiric teeth, sinister pointed nose, bulging eyes with pink and yellow pupils, pointy ears, and conical horns. Inside the horns are pellets that create a rattling sound as the dancer moves and the cheeks, nostrils, and mouth are pierced for the wearer to see through. A classic devil mask that combines the anthropomorphic and goat / animalistic qualities associated with Satan. The surface has great signs of age and use, the pigments cracking, revealing the dark patina of the silver below, and the interior is lined with a rough fabric. Size: 13.5" L x 10" W (34.3 cm x 25.4 cm); silver quality: 88%; weight: 907.18 grams
Local legend says the silver came from the melted coins from the Spanish Colonial era, and the rattle pellets inside the horns are the bones of babies… The devil character is part of the Pastorela, the Shepherd's Play, and are not meant to frighten but to entertain and amuse, and this is undoubtedly one of the finest examples of these masks we have ever seen!
