**First Time At Auction**
Western Europe, France, First Republic period, Reign of Terror or Mountain Republic, ca. 26th of October 1793. Wow! A rare historical document from the Reign of Terror featuring an impressive collection of signatures from 4 members of the French National Convention: Lazare Carnot, Jean-Marie Collot d'Herbois, Maximilien Robespierre, and Jacques Billaud-Varenne. Printed on laid paper, the document bears the number 16 and the heading of the French National Convention of 1792 at the top, followed by French hand-written script stating that the Committee of Public Safety wishes to remove the General of Division Jacques Ferrand (1746-1804) of the army of Ardennes. This document was penned during the 8 months from the fall of 1793 to the spring of 1794 when Maximilien Robespierre and his allies dominated the Committee of Public Safety, largely recognized as the most radical and bloodiest phase of the French Revolution. Size of document: 6.8" W x 11.8" H (17.3 cm x 30 cm); of frame: 16.75" W x 19.75" H (42.5 cm x 50.2 cm)
Ten days previous to this extract, Marie Antoinette was declared guilty by the Revolutionary Tribunal and guillotined in the Place de la Revolution, the present-day Place de la Concorde.
Translated from French, the document reads: "Extract from the Register of Decrees of the Committee of Public Safety of the National Convention from the fifth day of the second month of 1793, the second year of the French Republic, one and indivisible. The Committee of Public Safety decides that the Minister of War will recall the General of Division Ferrand, appointed Chief Commander of the army of Ardennes, to employ him in his grade to another destination that will be judged more suitable to the Republic. Signed in the register, Collot-D'herbois, Carnot, C. a Prieur, Billaud Varenne, Robespierre, B Barere. For Extract." Followed by the signatures of Lazare Carnot, Jean-Marie Collot d'Herbois, Maximilien Robespierre, and Jacques Billaud-Varenne. Contrary to the text, the signatures of Bertrand Barere and Claude Prieur-Duvernois are not present.
Provenance: private Boynton Beach, Florida, USA collection; ex-L'Autographe, Geneva, Switzerland, ca. 1990
