Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A fine and quite rare copper applique in the form of a horse head, naturalistically rendered with fleshy folds of skin lining the neck and an open mouth, as though letting out an energetic "neigh!" The details are wonderful; note his neatly manicured mane with striated marks delineating his locks, those beautifully outlined eyes, the perky, pointed ears, and the flared nostrils of his nose. Perforations near the top peripheries made it possible to attach. Horses signified power and military prowess. In addition, they were symbolic of the god Neptune as well as the Roman legions. Size: 1.5" L x 1.7" W x 2.3" H (3.8 cm x 4.3 cm x 5.8 cm); 2.8" H (7.1 cm) on included custom stand.
Horses also inspired love amongst Romans. For example, the horses of Roman Algeria were renowned, and citizens were passionate about chariot races and hunting. One mosaic found there portrays a race horse with the words, "Win or lose, we love you, Polidoxus." Another famous example comes from Emperor Caligula (r. 37 to 41 CE), who is said to have loved his horse to the point of parody - although modern historians believe that the wild stories about his devotion to Incitatus are the result of Caligula's own humorous quips and Roman chroniclers wishing to portray the emperor as insane. The cavalry rode horses in parades and on battlefields and transported elite citizens when they hunted or traveled. Perhaps this handsome horse's head was part of a memorial honoring these activities.
