Native American, Western United States, Plains Tribes, likely Lakota, ca. early 20th century CE. A jawbone from a bison painted with pigments in red and black: figures and horses, teepees, and geometric symbols. Jawbones from bison were often used as weapons or other tools, the area between the missing incisor teeth and front molar tooth makes a good handle grip, and clubs were used in warfare as well as ceremonial events. Storytelling and history were traditionally illustrated on hide and sometimes bone such as this piece, to convey successes in war or other significant and personal events. The figures on horseback with spears may represent a battle ? the black horse rider seems to stand over a prone body with blood surrounding. Size: 14.5" L x 1" W x 8.75" H (36.8 cm x 2.5 cm x 22.2 cm)
According to the previous owner this jaw was exhibited or purchased by a family member at the Chicago World?s Fair in 1934, although this cannot be confirmed. The rough and graphic nature of the painting may have been specifically to attract those looking to buy Native American souvenirs.
