Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mangbetu or possibly Zande people, ca. mid 20th century. A fabulous carved-wood female figure boasting a lustrous burnish over mottled hues of caramel and chocolate brown. Standing atop block-like feet, the wonderful figure presents straight, slender legs with protruding knees and ankles, a bulging belly, two small, raised breasts, and sloped shoulders. Her slender arms hang to her sides with her right hand resting on her hip and her left on her bulbous posterior. Supported by a thick neck, her stylized visage presents a prominent chin, thick lips, a triangular nose, and slitted eyes under high arching brows. A pair of cupped ears flanks her head. Though nude, the figure's smoothly carved body is adorned with horizontal and undulating striations filled with cream-colored pigment, while her face bears two drooping incised designs filled with a lattice motif, likely representing body and face paint. A cylindrical headdress that flares to a wide, flat top caps her head. Size: 4.75" W x 21.625" H (12.1 cm x 54.9 cm); 22.5" H (57.2 cm) on included custom stand.
