North America, Midwestern United States, Michigan, Keweenaw County, ca. millions of years ago. This is a rare copper ore known as mohawkite, a mixture of silver, nickel, copper, and other minerals. This slab is cut and polished to show off the glimmering golden, coppery surface that is offset by the white quartzite inclusions. There is only one place in the world where mohawkite has been discovered - Keweenaw County in Michigan - which makes it quite scarce! The name comes from the Mohawk mine where the ore was first found in 1900! After analysis mohawkite was thought to be a new mineral but when reassessed, it was determined to be an intimate mixture of copper and nickel arsenide. Size: 10.25" L x 0.3" W x 7.25" H (26 cm x 0.8 cm x 18.4 cm); 10.25" H (26 cm) on included custom stand.
