Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java, Majapahit Empire, ca. 1293 to 1527 CE. A handsome, hand-sculpted pottery head of a hollow form depicting a regal individual, perhaps a prince or an aristocrat. The rounded face bears a pensive countenance and features recessed almond-shaped eyes with elongated canthi and tubular pupils, gently arching brows, full lips with a slit-form horizontal delineation as well as an impressed philtrum, a rounded chin, cupped ears bedecked with elaborate earrings, and a prominent aquiline nose with flared nostrils and a bar-shaped ornament through the septum. His backswept coiffure is intricately incised with dozens of thin striations to create the appearance of hair, and the central pointed crest adds an additional layer of elegance to the head. The circular neckline suggests this head was at one time part of a larger figure that was perhaps adorned with clothing, jewelry, or brightly colored pigment. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 8.5" W x 8.375" H (21.6 cm x 21.3 cm)
