South Asia, India, ca. 19th to early-20th century CE. A sandstone sculpture, likely once part of a building facade, possibly a royal monument, temple, or governmental structure. The depiction of a soldier reflects modern influences, perhaps with European colonial elements - featuring knee-high boots, a button-down tunic or coat, a turban headdress, and what appears to be a rifle held against the shoulder. It was not uncommon to depict soldiers with firearms in architectural decoration. This sculpture can be compared to similar soldier carvings found at the Chhatri at Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh. Size: 11" L x 8" W x 40" H (27.9 cm x 20.3 cm x 101.6 cm)
