Pre-Columbian, Central Peru, Huari (Wari) culture, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. This is an amazing pottery mask that is slightly larger than life-sized of a stylized face that is expertly molded by hand and painted with warm hues. The circular visage has emphasized and high relief features, large almond shaped eyes with incised pupils within lid rims, and a rounded brow bone, over slightly rounded and burnished cheeks. The nose is bulbous and protrudes dramatically over an open mouth with slightly raised lips. The orange slipped surface is painted with pairs of vertical bands of beige and red from brow to chin and over the lips and eyes. This mask was perhaps attached to the front of a mummy bundle which would have contained the cremated remains of a once-living individual. Size: 10" L x 11" W (25.4 cm x 27.9 cm); 11.75" H (29.8 cm) on included custom stand.
