North America, Wyoming, Big Horn Basin, Morrison Formation, Jurassic Period, ca. 206 to 144 million years ago. This is a fossilized rib bone from Diplodocus, a Sauropod dinosaur; a massive piece that certainly helps scale the size of these creatures! This is an entire rib bone with minimal restoration, and it is rare to find such complete bones, and interestingly there is evidence of a fused break that likely happened during the lifetime of the dinosaur! The bone is curved and flares at one end to an area known as the capitulum, which connects to the vertebrae. The overall size and gorgeous black coloration make these bones highly desirable and a fantastic display piece, much like a modern piece of sculpture! Size: 45" L x 9" W (114.3 cm x 22.9 cm)
Diplodocus was a contemporary of Brontosaurus and Brachiosaurus, all sauropods characterized by long tails, long necks, and four thick legs. Diplodocus was the longest known dinosaur; its tail its full body length could have reached over 100 feet! Diplodocus lived in a very different Wyoming than the one we know today; the interior western North America during the Jurassic period was a shallow, warm, sea. Diplodocus and other dinosaurs that it coexisted alongside left behind their footprints and bodies in these shallow waters; when the Rocky Mountains were formed in the Laramide Orogeny 70-80 million years ago, the rocks bearing their fossilized remains were thrust upwards and exposed. Therefore, some of the richest fossil beds in the world are along the edges of the Rocky Mountains!
