Western Europe, Germany, Rhineland, Palatinate region, Oligocene period, ca. 30 million years ago. An extremely rare and fascinating fossil of a stromatolite bacteria colony on a host rock! The formation is intact with natural ball like structures. This is an Oligocene lacustrine stromatolite colony, meaning that it formed from cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) deposits in a prehistoric lake. Preserved natural stromatolites are scarce as most stromatolites we see are cut and polished; it is rare to find a large specimen with the lifelike anatomy intact! This specimen is professionally prepared with the sedimentary matrix removed to reveal these amazing structures. Each cyanobacteria ball shows the colony’s detail and fully inflated definition as it was when once alive. Size: 8.5" L x 3.5" W x 6" H (21.6 cm x 8.9 cm x 15.2 cm)
Stromatolites are the first evidence of lifeforms on Earth! When space exploration seeks life on other planets such as Mars, the specific evidence they are looking for is the presence of fossil stromatolites - traces of prehistoric bacteria colonies, such as displayed here. Stromatolite fossils should be the foundation of any fossil display or collection and yet, they are often absent, and their importance overlooked despite their enormous scientific importance in the history of all life.
