Ancient Seas, Western Europe, Western Germany, Lauterecken Formation, Lower Permian, 295 to 280 million years ago. This is an extremely rare and unusual example of a perfectly preserved and lifelike lacustrine stromatolite bacteria ball colony, a prehistoric cyanobacteria, formed in a prehistoric lake. Stromatolite are the first indication of life on earth - these fossils are of great importance in the puzzle of evolution! The colony is intact and embedded on the stone matrix that it fossilized upon. This specimen has been laboriously prepared in a professional lab where the upper rock layer was carefully removed to reveal all the delicate intact anatomy of a large cyanobacteria ball colony. The detail is so minute and intact it appears as if still alive nearly 300 million years ago, just before the most devastating mass extinction event on our planet, the Permian Period! Size of colony: 2" Diameter (5.1 cm); matrix: 9.75" L x 7" W x 3.75" H (24.8 cm x 17.8 cm x 9.5 cm)
Stromatolites are the first evidence of lifeforms on Earth! When space exploration seeks life on other planets such as Mars, the specific evidence they are looking for is the presence of fossil stromatolites - traces of prehistoric bacteria colonies, such as displayed here. Stromatolite fossils should be the foundation of any fossil display or collection and yet, they are often absent, and their importance overlooked despite their enormous scientific importance in the history of all life.
