South Central Europe, Gravel Deposit, Late Pleistocene to Mesolithic, ca. 16,500 to 8,500 years ago. This is an extremely rare offering - a beautiful, fossilized skull with the original lower jaw and teeth, from a European Ice Age wild boar, Sus scrofa. The skull and lower jaw are in impeccable condition, containing all molars and pre-molars, original tusks, and three of the original six incisors. How the lower tusks avoided damage during dredging is miraculous, as their sharp tips are even still intact! A gorgeous umber brown hue has developed throughout, and this piece deserves a place in a museum or any public exhibition. This boar was an important megafauna that lived during Europe's final Ice Age and Stone Age as this was one of the primary hunted animals of Upper Paleolithic and Mesolithic humans. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire an Ice Age fossilized boar skull with the original jaw, teeth, and tusks! Size of upper skull: 12.4" L (31.5 cm); mandible: 10.8" L (27.4 cm)
The German private collection this skull came from spanned nearly 40 years, comprising many of the rarest and most complete European Ice Age fossils and this skull was the only boar skull with an original lower jaw and original tusks and teeth. It was reportedly found by gravel dredge in south central Europe, from a layer that included other extinct megafauna such as Megaloceros, Woolly Rhino, Steppe Bison, as well as some Mesolithic antler tools in a layer just above its find spot layer.
