North Africa, Morocco, Anti-Atlas Mountains, Ktaoua Formation, Ordovician period, ca. 488 to 443 million years ago. An extremely interesting and aesthetic slab displaying a variety of prehistoric marine fossils that may have all perished in a mass death before being covered in the same layers of sediment. The fossils include: 2 corals, a spectacular 6-inch (15.2 cm) Selenopeltis trilobite, a negative impression of a different Selenopeltis trilobite but with most of the positive fossil spines attached to the impression, numerous Onnia trilobites and rare spiny-tailed Mucronaspis trilobites, and a Dalmanitid-type trilobite. This is a 100% natural association of all fossils shown on this slab - none have been artificially attached as is common with many group fossils. The Selenopeltis trilobite is a spectacular specimen, but the real celebrity of this piece are the two coral fossils, namely, the giant and bizarrely preserved 12-inch (30.5 cm) colony specimen! Size (coral): 12" L (30.5 cm); (trilobite): 6" L (15.2 cm); (matrix): 29.5" L x 21" W (74.9 cm x 53.3 cm)
This coral fossil shows rarely seen large pore anatomy and a complete, full inflation coming off the rock. Nearly every coral fossil of this age from Morocco are nothing more than a faint, flat impressions on the rock, lacking any detail like this incredible piece! These fossils exceed the quality of anatomical features and detail from most North African specimens and are both beautiful as they are scientifically interesting!
