Central Asia, eastern Kazakhstan, late Miocene Kalmakpai, ca. 15 to 2 million years ago. Wow! One of the largest saber-toothed cat skulls ever auctioned! A remarkable and extremely rare fossilized skull of a saber-toothed Machairodus kurteni cat displaying two sizable four-inch sabers. Supported by a custom stand, this impressive fossil exhibits a lengthy lower jaw with three molars on either side and six front teeth flanked by two sharp fangs. Dominated by the enormous, curved scimitar teeth, the upper jaw shows six front teeth with several molars further back on both sides. A pair of annular eye sockets lays on both sides of the flat-topped snout. Machairodus cat skulls are more commonly found in East Asia, making this skull found in Kazakhstan not only a member of the kurteni species (a relatively new species discovered in 1991), but also an utmost anomaly (only one other skull of this quality has ever been found). Size: 14" L x 8" W x 10.5" H (35.6 cm x 20.3 cm x 26.7 cm); 12.375" H (31.4 cm) on included custom stand.
Coming from the largest genus of saber cats to have walked the earth, this ancient feline could reach up to 17 to 18 feet long - over 1.5 times the size of the Bengal tiger! A must for any collector!
In "The Big Cats and Their Fossil Relatives", Alan Stout writes, "The various species of Machariodus show an evolution over time toward the more extreme specialization seen in the genus Homotherium, to which it is believed to have been ancestral; the Russian paleontologist Marina Sotnikova has suggested that a new species, Machairodus kurteni from Kalmakpai in Kazakhstan, may be a likely candidate for such ancestry. But, overall, the genus retains more primitive, generalized features. These are most obviously seen in the dentition, where the jaw of Machairodus retains a greater number of teeth, and also in some of the bodily proportions..."
