Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Apulia, Daunian, early Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd century BCE. A lovely set of conjoined twin bowls resting upon planar bases with globular bodies, flared rims with recessed grooves for lids, and an applied strap handle arching in between, all presented in a tan-slipped ground. Each rim boasts an interior register of black-slipped concentric semicircles, and the handle displays a repeating chevron motif. Decorative registers of undulating wave forms, interlocking circles, and dense netted patterns are separated by thin concentric bands and bars of applied orange-red pigment. The lowest register features abstract avian figures, stars, and spoked wheels separated by vertical columns of interlocking circles, concentric lines, and zigzags. Traces of powdery pink pigment are visible along the lid rims. An ornate and rare example of classic Daunian artistry! Size: 11" W x 7.625" H (27.9 cm x 19.4 cm).
