Ancient Cyprus, Archaic Period, ca. 6th century BCE. A wonderful sculpture of a head, skillfully hand-carved from limestone in the archaic style. The ancient figure gazes forth from huge, almond-shaped eyes beneath a gently arched brow, a flat nose, full lips, and a pointed chin, all capped by a centrally parted coiffure and a Phrygian cap. Incised horizontal bands and lattice motif adorn the pointed headdress, as ear flaps flank the fascinating visage. Size: 2.5" W x 3.9" H (6.4 cm x 9.9 cm); 5.5" H (14 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
Fragment of a larger piece. Loss to nose, as well as some abrasions and softening of detail, all commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with light earthen deposits in recessed areas.
