Central Asia, Late Miocene, ca. 11.6 million years ago. An absolutely amazing, fossilized skull from a prehistoric hyena, a genus known as Adcrocuta. This skull bears a strong resemblance to modern day hyenas- prominent zygomatic arches and short, broad snouts. This animal had powerful jaws and large teeth for meat and cracking bones - the teeth are bared and on display in this complete skull! The bone has fossilized with a white and beige hue and is a fascinating but intimidating reminder of these carnivores that were both large and highly successful; their remains have been found throughout their vast geographical range of northern Africa and Eurasia. Like many prehistoric animals, the cause of extinction is not fully understood, but likely due to climate change, and an inability to compete with other specialized predators caused their decline.
