Ancient Greece, Classical / Hellenistic period, ca. 5th to 1st century BCE. A lovely and luxurious kylix vessel cast from high quality 96.94% silver. This was designed as a wine cup and rests upon a foot with loop handles that curve dramatically out and inward for the drinker to grip. This is a truly exceptional kylix, as silver would have been a tremendously scarce and valuable material during the Hellenistic period; silver excavation in the Laurion mines had been disrupted by the Peloponnesian War (431-404 BCE) and never reached the same level of production that the Classical era saw. Size: 6.8" L x 2.9" H (17.3 cm x 7.4 cm); silver quality 96.94%; weight: 124.4 gram s
Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection acquired before 2000; ex-Arte Primitvo, New York, USA
