Pre-Columbian, Peru (Ecuador border ), Chavin Maranon, 1500 BCE. Older than ceramics of the classic Chavin era, and according to the current owner, one of only two known erotic ceramics of this type in existence, this piece is intriguing for its explicit erotic subject matter and polychrome finish in red, orange, cream, and black. The figure in front is prone with hands on the ground, body delineated with perforated nipples for liquid to flow through, striped and beaded bands, visage with closed coffee bean shaped eyes, a prominent curved nose adorned with nose ring, slit mouth, and cap-like coiffure. The figure behind crouches and holds his partner's buttocks while engaging in the act. His face is similar - comprised of slit coffee bean eyes, a projecting nose, and slit mouth - though distinctly adorned with a stylized pyramidal/step motif facial tattoo, strapped helmet, pierced ears presumably for suspending ornaments, black zigzags and circular motifs upon his chest, and striated/beaded bands adorning his waist and limbs. A bold example of ancient erotic stirrup vessel! Size: 9" W x 7" H (22.9 cm x 17.8 cm)
