Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chavin, Maranon River, Amazon Rainforest, ca. 1200 BCE or earlier. An important and very rare bi-chrome shaman effigy stirrup vessel, presenting extensive details - both incised and delineated in low to high relief. The elite figure sits with his arms bent showing pointed elbows, hands placed over his chest, and upraised knees. He looks out with a serious countenance as if entranced or engaged in prayer or ritual. His visage is comprised of almond-shaped eyes with bulging red pupils, a naturalistic nose, a downturned mouth, and deep wrinkles running from the lower corners of his nose to his jawline - all crowned by a high headdress adorned with a double striation at the center and a border framing his face, delineated in burnished red pigment. His rounded body is half red and half white, with stippled marks throughout. An ample stirrup spout joins the figure's head and back. Size: 5.5" W x 10.375" H (14 cm x 26.4 cm)
Vessels like this one probably were used for holding offerings and pouring libations of chicha over graves and the bodies of the dead. The artwork of Chavin represents the first widespread style in the Andes, inspirational to later cultures, especially the Moche. Chavin polychrome stirrups are extremely rare and are found only on the Jequetepeque River on its estuary called Cayalti, or in the Amazonas part of the Maranon River. The Chavin people lived in the northern Highland Andes, and their capital, Chavin de Huantar, is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The artwork of Chavin represents the first widespread style in the Andes.
