Pre-Columbian, North Mexico, Chihuahua, Casas Grandes (Paquime), ca. 1280 to 1450 CE. This is an amazing polychrome zoomorphic effigy vessel created by the Paquime or Casas Grandes culture! The body has a rounded but stable base, and the frontside is pinched into an elongated shape with nostrils and mouth impressed into a snout. The circular eyes have slightly raised pupils, and ears are present towards the back on each side of the vessel. This adorable black and white animal is likely a badger or coati effigy! A neck and flared rim lead into the deep interior of the jar. The exterior is painted in hues of black and russet red upon a creamy beige slip, and the rim and verso are decorated with wavy linear motifs and a circular cross, perhaps to represent the four cardinal directions. Casas Grandes is Spanish for Great Houses as these people are known for developing multistoried dwellings. Size: 7.5" W x 6" H (19 cm x 15.2 cm)
Both badgers and coatis (coatimundis) are found in Mexico, and both are depicted in pre-Columbian art. The iconography of these animals can be confusing - the coati has a similar facial structure and black and white markings as badgers, and it does not help that the Spanish word for badger is "tejon," but in Mexico this word is also used to describe the coati. Whether this vessel is a badger or coati, both creatures are native to the region and make for an interesting depiction!
