Classical World, Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Campania, ca. 340 to 320 BCE. A fascinating pottery baby feeder presenting in the shape of a breast with a globular body capped by a conical knob intended to resemble a nipple, all enveloped in a lustrous black glaze. To feed her infant, an ancient mother would place her nipple in the annular opening on the base, grasping the feeding vessel by the loop-form handle that extends from the side, while the baby would then suck on the narrow tube that protrudes from the shoulder. The spherical body would then hold the milk for the baby until it was ready to eat, acting as a ceramic breast for the child. Incised vertical lines further adorn the exterior, accentuating the elegant curvaceousness of its form. Size: 4.4" Diameter x 3.1" H (11.2 cm x 7.9 cm)
Although wet nursing was the alternative feeding method of choice for infants in the past, artificial feeding devices are also known. These came in all shapes and sizes, with this being quite an elegant example of form and function. Initially, archaeologists believed that objects like these were used for filling oil lamps, but residue analysis found casein from animal's milk in them. Unfortunately, pottery feeders were difficult to clean, leading to bacterial build up and studies on skeletal remains suggest that up to one third of infants given animal's milk died.
