Central Europe, Germany & Poland, Urnfield & Lusatian (Lausitz) culture, Bronze Age, ca. 1300 to 500 BCE. This is a unique opportunity to acquire an extremely rare European Bronze Age ceramic urn. European Urnfield culture ceramics are among the rarest of all handmade pottery in the ancient world! The vessel rests on an applied foot, with the walls swelling gently outward and up to a flared neck. The exterior is unadorned with lovely terracotta hues. This is not just an ordinary "everyday life" utilitarian ceramic piece, but a ritualistic burial and funerary vessel used by Lusatian culture. Usually only found in museum collections in Europe, Urnfield pottery is extremely rare! This is a fascinating glimpse into ancient religious practices and burial customs of ancient European peoples from the Bronze Age into the Early Iron Age. Size: 6.25" Diameter x 7.5" H (15.9 cm x 19 cm)
These ceramics are exceedingly rare and lesser known than contemporary Greco-Roman pottery. This impressive Lusatian culture (also Lausitz culture) burial urn was the primary vessel used, and secondary pieces would have accompanied this main vessel, such as cups, small dishes, and dippers. For every single burial vessel discovered, there are dozens of secondary pieces inside or around the main piece, so the rarity of this primary urn cannot be over-emphasized! Some burial vessels of the of the Lusatian culture ranged in size and contained cremated ashes and sometimes small objects placed inside the urn. A bowl or saucer was placed upside down over the top as a lid, and the whole set was buried in a field. Since primary burial urns were put directly into the ground versus secondary vessels being placed inside which were more protected, these primary vessels seldom survive. Most are heavily damaged, requiring extensive repair and restoration. This specific piece lacks any major fabrication and was re-assembled from mostly complete fragments of medium to large size. The inside was left un-restored so that viewers can exactly see that nearly the entire piece is original.
