Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Aztec Empire, ca. 1200 to 1532 CE. An intriguing and rare depiction of a shamanic figure, hand-carved from red-brown hardstone and presenting a captivating form. The shamanic figure sits with both legs held close to his chest, with arms over both knees, and a U-shaped loincloth in front of a thick, padded belt. His posture exhibits a slight lean, perhaps as he is entering a trance-like state, and his enlarged, ovoid eyes further this assumption. His tilted head stares forward past the boundaries of space and time while contemplating the world around him, and an enormous serpent headdress - perhaps representing the feathered serpent god Quetzalcoatl - engulfs the back of his head, his jawline, and his brow. A fascinating sculpture from the ancient Aztec. Size: 4.25" W x 6.7" H (10.8 cm x 17 cm); 8.6" H (21.8 cm) on included custom stand.
