Undescribed Redlichid; found in Anti-Atlas Mountains, South Morocco; Cambrian, 542 to 488 million years ago. In the past several years, many new fascinating invertebrate fossils have been discovered in the rich deposits of southern Morocco, North Africa. Resembling a reduced size Paradoxides sp. yet with a thicker carapace and longer, thinner sweeping genal spines, this is a yet, unnamed species of the Redlichiida order of trilobites. For advanced collectors wishing to add a new and very rare specimen to their collection, this could be a prime acquisition! Size: 8.4" W x 7" H (21.3 cm x 17.8 cm); trilobite is 6" L (15.2 cm)
The articulation of this example is extremely unusual. It looks like a fighter jet putting on its air brakes! Every segment is raised up in an over-extended manner. The big question one has to ask is why this is. Could it just be the sediment moving after its burial before fossilization or could this rare trilobite type have the ability to raise its segments in a defense behavior similar to spines being raised? If the latter is true, then this could not only be an ULTRA-RARE fossil species, but an even more rare fossilized capture of a defense mechanism in action at the time the trilobite died!
An absolutely rare gem specimen, most highly recommended for the finest collections. Next to the Paradoxides and Cambropallas sp. trilobites of the North African Cambrian, this unnamed type seems to rank with those other giants as one of the 'much larger than typical' species known in the formation.
