Western Europe, Medieval, ca. 13th to 16th century CE. One of my favorite pieces in this sale, and in fully working condition! Solid, heavy carbon steel mace head used as a close-combat weapon when attacking, or being attacked, by your foe. The metal socket would have been attached to a short wooden club, with 3 chain links leading to the working section - an apple-shaped cast orb of metal with 4 links extending from the top. When swung, this beast could create bone-crunching injuries and instant death when striking the opponent's skull or even chest. It makes one wonder how much damage a mace actually inflicted in battle, or whether its owner suffered a fatal blow from an arrow, a stab from a pike, or possibly ran for the hills (as I would have done). Size extended length: 13.5" L (34.3 cm); mace head: 2.375" W x 2" H (6 cm x 5.1 cm); weight: 555 grams
Provenance: private London, UK collection; ex-private W.P. collection since the 1990s, acquired on the German art market
