North America, Mexico, late Spanish Colonial Period, ca. 19th century CE. A rare and beautiful brass altar candlestick of a functional form with an ovoid panel depicting a venerated painted image of the Virgin Mary as the Virgin of Guadalupe. Attached to the bell-shaped base is an acorn-form midsection, a discoid sconce, and a goblet-shaped candleholder, all in front of a spiraling thumbpiece along the verso. The panel on which the Virgin of Guadalupe is painted is attached beneath the scone via a serpentine brass bar. The Virgin herself is delicately portrayed, with a red and white vestment covered with a blue veil lined with golden pigment and golden stars. She stars down with serene eyes and gentle brows at her hands which are held in a gesture of prayer while wrapped in a rosary. A resplendent example of Spanish Colonial religious artistry! Size: 6.8" W x 13.1" H (17.3 cm x 33.3 cm)
