East Asia, Japan, Edo to Meiji Period, ca. mid-19th to early 20th century CE. An antique bamboo, wood, and metal mesh ornate cage for transporting birds. The wooden frame has removeable panels entirely of bamboo on the 2 longest sides, that fit over a red lacquered wood frame with wire mesh - and these inner mesh panels are also removable, sliding out on grooved runners. The front door panel has a cutout square window that in lined with a smaller mesh weave, this door is removable by sliding upward, and inside the box is a wood pan liner of a light unpainted wood also that slides out, convenient to clean up after the animals. The dark exterior is painted with animals on the sides, horse, dog, fish, bird, mouse, and a den-den daiko drum, robed man, and bow and arrow in maki-e gold and red lacquer. An iron ring handle is set on the top for carrying and a petite ring pull is attached to the side panel. Size: 20.25" L x 14" W x 18.75" H (51.4 cm x 35.6 cm x 47.6 cm)

Condition
Exterior wooden panel on one side is missing the ring handle, and both panels are slightly warped and difficult to remove from the box or reinsert. Losses to wire mesh on one side. Old inactive insect activity on interior with small cavities. Large chips to base and surface wear to exterior as expected with use and age. Lacquer motifs are intact and very good. Some panels are stiff and do not slide easily, but all are intact and very good. Rare item!
