North America, Southwestern United States or Mexico, Spanish Colonial Period, ca. early 18th century CE. A truly exceptional matched pair of iron estribos de cruz stirrups with low relief engravings and openwork, forged into a cruciform shape, with a foot hole in the center, and two elongated flaps that point downward. The ornate openwork and detailing that went into a simple utilitarian item is astounding; scrolling foliate motifs on the lower footrest panels contain rearing lions, the same vine patterning and lions is punched into the upper crossbars. Besides the rich iconography, the sheer size and weight is quite remarkable, and these stirrups were preferred by rancheros and calvary soldiers to highlight their elite status, since horses were a luxury that few could afford. Eventually this type was banned and destroyed by Spanish officials since they posed a danger to bystanders and the cross shape was sacrilegious. Matching pairs are a rare find in such great condition! Size of each (both are relatively similar): 15.25" L x 9" W (38.7 cm x 22.9 cm); 16.75" H (42.5 cm) on included custom stand
