Polynesia, Fiji, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A fascinating, rare, triple-chambered vessel with great incised and raised decoration on its body. The vessel features a single upward-angled spout on one chamber and a small opening on the center line of another chamber; the other is fully closed. Three arching handles meet at the center above the trio, which also has a spout-like opening. Around the upper body and on the handle, incised diagonal and cross-hatched linear decorations give the impression of observing thatching. The lines of raised bumps that go around the widest part of each chamber and along the length of the handle give the piece a great organic appearance. Size: 6.5" W x 4.5" H (16.5 cm x 11.4 cm)
Pottery has a fascinating history in Polynesia. The Lapita people, who settled the region around 3000 years ago, brought with them a well made and distinctive pottery tradition. However, around 500 CE, that tradition disappeared almost everywhere in Polynesia - except Fiji. The Fijian people kept it alive using the same techniques until the present day, although styles did change.
