Western Europe, Germany, Medieval period, ca. 12th to early 14th century CE. This remarkable Great Helm from the Middle Ages is composed of five thick sheets of metal, hammered on both the interior and exterior, with the outer surface likely polished after hammering. The helm is riveted together and features a somewhat bucket-shaped design with a flat top, a nose guard panel, ventilation holes, and eye slits. As an important piece of knightly armor, the Great Helm encased the entire head and face for maximum protection against flesh wounds and was worn over a padded coif or hood. However in the 14th century, the Great Helm was phased out in favor of more practical helmets like the barbute and visor helmet, which provided better ventilation and visibility without sacrificing protection. The Great Helm is an iconic early style, used by Crusaders and famously inspiring the costume worn by the Black Knight character in the classic film "Monty Python and the Holy Grail." Size: 9" Diameter x 11.5" H (22.9 cm x 29.2 cm); 18" H (45.7 cm) on included custom stand.
