Robert Grogan (American, 20th-21st century) . "Fall Reflections" oil on canvas, 2001. Signed by the artist on the lower right. A beautiful landscape painting depicting a tranquil view of the Wasatch Mountains in Utah, created en plein air by Robert Grogan and set in an attractive gold-tone frame. The composition presents a lovely scene of the American West in all its autumnal splendor, featuring warm orange and golden yellow foliage alternating with evergreens, high peaks of the Wasatch Mountains in the distance, and clear blue skies above - all delineated in Grogan's loose brushwork and simultaneous penchant for form, his signature styleconjuring both Impressionist (Monet) as well as Post-Impressionist (Cezanne) influences. Working on location is Grogan's preference and informs his paintings with palpable sensuality. Size of sight view: 7.625" L x 9.375" W (19.4 cm x 23.8 cm) Size of frame: 14.125" L x 16.125" W (35.9 cm x 41 cm)
According to the artist's site, "Robert's paintings are in an impressionistic style that crosses the line into realism. His subjects are portrayed by the use of tightly controlled values, resulting in exquisite color harmony, and the details are added in such a subtle manner the viewer is surprised that they are often mere suggestions. He prefers painting on location--"en plein air," choosing landscapes as his primary subject matter. Often he uses the information captured in a small field sketch to expand his studio work."
This painting is also accompanied by a letter addressed to Robert and Cynthia from Grant & Julie, Bernd & Paula - a thank you note for hosting their visit June 13-16 2002 at Little Jenny Ranch in Wyoming that lists their precious memories, "We remember with pleasure when we watched the antelope play; peeved the mares by cooing too close to their foals, visited horses on holiday at the Honeymoon Cottage and rode horses to imitate respectable ranch hands; ate and drank extravagantly, and lounged by the pool as if we deserved it; encountered Wyomingians in their local habitat while inspecting musical equipment, alter adornments, and log maintenance at the Episcopal Church, reading the notices on the post office bulletin board, and stopping for supplies at the Elkhorn Bar and General Store; swam in the hot spring and rumbled into the wilderness in a vintage Land Rover; provided amusement for Rusty, Gary, and ranch hands, while simultaneously seeing real ranch work happening; looked at the stars and felt honored to be there."
According to our correspondence from Robert Grogan's wife Lee Grogan, "The location of this plein air study was in the Wasatch Mountains in Utah, near the town of Midway. I am guessing the Little Jenny Ranch is located in Jackson." Lee Grogan also shared that she and Robert have lived in Sun Valley, Idaho for over 25 years. They have also spent time in South Africa for the past 15 years. According to Lee, "Robert still paints avidly and has a book of his wildlife photos and landscape paintings from the Kalahari titled Kalahari Summer in Photographs and Oils, published by Random House Struik in Cape Town in 2014. He is currently working on another three books, one about the Southeast Alaska coast, one about the Sonoran Desert, and another concerning South Africa."
