Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Quimbaya, ca. 1st to 7th century CE. A high karat gold (18 kt) figural poporo in the form of a nude, male Cazique, proudly standing with hands on hips, presenting a frontal, seemingly tranquil visage (perhaps engaged in a trancelike state induced by coca) comprised of closed coffee-bean shaped eyes, a wide nose, and full lips - highly decorated with multiple earrings, an elaborate pectoral of repeated spiral motifs, as well as double-strand beaded bracelets and anklets. A magnificent figural effigy flask presenting a refined, balanced composition that clearly required a strong command of technique to create. Size: 2" W x 3.5" H (5.1 cm x 8.9 cm) Weight: 110 grams
A poporo is a device used by indigenous cultures in Pre-Columbian South America for storage of small amounts of lime made from calcined seashells used to enjoy the effects of coca leaves. It consists of two pieces: the receptacle, and the lid which includes a pin used to carry the lime to the mouth while chewing coca leaves. Since the chewing of coca has traditionally been considered sacred for the indigenous people, poporos have also been attributed with mystical powers and social status. The Quimbaya civilization is noted for spectacular gold work characterized by technical accuracy and detailed designs. Most of the retrieved items are part of funeral offerings, found in the inside of sarcophagi made of hollow trunks. The gold used to create poporos like this example was regarded as a sacred metal, ideal for the passage of an elite to the afterlife.
This example is similar to examples featured in the historic exhibition "Beyond El Dorado Power & Gold in Ancient Colombia" at the British Museum from October 2013 to March 2014.
