Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A wonderful gathering of four cast-bronze pyxides with accompanying lids. Each vessel has a flat base, walls incised with thin linear bands, a shallow interior basin, and slightly-smaller rims to accommodate a lid. The lids are discoid in form with five concentric circles surrounding a central dot, and a similar concentric design adorns each base. All four vessels are covered in a beautiful emerald green patina with scattered areas of dark-brown patina as well. Members of the Roman military used examples like these to store rations and other materials. Once empty, the containers would condense and fit inside one another to make use of the extremely limited carrying capacity each soldier had. Size of largest: 3.25" W x 1.75" H (8.3 cm x 4.4 cm).
The pyxis form is found throughout the Classical world as well as the ancient Near East. The rounded vessel typically has a small fitted lid, originally made to hold cosmetics, trinkets, or jewelry. Roman military members utilized their compact form for transporting and sealing precious rations when on marching across distant lands. Later Christian examples were made to hold the Host. These examples are from a pre-Christian time, replete with a style characteristic of ancient Rome. Other examples are replete with meaningful symbols, such as lions, images of the fabled pegasus, and scenes depicting great battles.
