East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 1644 to 1912 CE. An exceptional ensemble of 5 red sandstone court figures featuring 3 female attendants, an arhat, and Guanyin. All dressed in long robes with foliate breast plates, the 3 attendants sit with hands together, covered by their long bellowing sleeves. The coiffure of each is piled in a towering top bun with a bird at the top and 2 more at the sides, while each visage displays down cast eyes, a naturalistic nose, full cheeks, and a petite mouth. Also draped in a long robe that closes at the chest, the bald arhat sits with both feet on the ground and hands in the Anjali mudra of greetings and gratefulness. Last, the bodhisattva Guanyin sits in lotus position atop a throne with a relief lion on its base. Her hands are positioned in the dhyana mudra of meditation as she holds a sphere representing the Pearl of Light. A marvelous and quite rare ensemble! Size of largest (one of the figures of bird on head): 8.5" L x 14.5" W x 30.6" H (21.6 cm x 36.8 cm x 77.7 cm)
Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection

Crowned figure's head has been professionally restored, while 4 others have had heads professionally reattached with restoration. Some have had other professional repairs as well. One female is missing bird head and another has had bird head professionally reattached. All have some surface wear with small losses, chipping, nicks, and abrasions as shown, but otherwise have nice remaining detail and good presentations.
All shipping is handled in-house for your convenience. Your invoice from Artemis Gallery will include shipping calculation instructions. If in doubt, please inquire BEFORE bidding for estimated shipping costs for individual items.
