- Lot Description
Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate Period, 21st to 22nd Dynasty, ca. 1069 to 720 BCE. A stunning pair of hand-carved wooden sarcophagus side panels, each of a straight form with a slight curve at one end, meant for a woman named Khaasneith. The surfaces are covered in chalky-white gesso and then painted with a white ground, with stripes of red and yellow pigment coursing across the exterior that enclose horizontal bars of dark hieroglyphic text, and a quartet of polychrome florettes along the upper rim upon a red and green ground. The sister deities Isis and Nephthys are presented standing, one on either panel, each wearing a form-fitting red gown outlined with black, Nephthys donning her signature temple-form headdress, and Isis with her throne-shaped headdress. Traces of the original dowel holes and mortises are visible along the sides and top of the panels. Two most impressive examples of ancient Egyptian funerary tradition! Size of largest (Nephthys): 43" L x 11.25" W (109.2 cm x 28.6 cm).
When translated, the painted hieroglyphic inscription on the exterior of the Nephthys panel reads, "[May a royal offering be given to … ] that he in turn may give invocation offerings of bread and beer, a thousand oxen and fowl, a thousand of incense, a thousand of linen, a thousand of …," and the inscription on the exterior of the Isis panel reads, "[…and everything good and] pure, everything pleasant and sweet, for the ka of the Osiris, the lady of the house, Khaasneith, true of voice."

#146804These are panels of a larger sarcophagus. Age-commensurate surface wear, small areas of wooden fill, several stable hairline fissures, with chipping and fading to original gesso and pigmentation with some areas of overpainting, light overpainting, light encrustations, and some water damage. Nice earthen deposits and traces of original pigmentation throughout as well as nice patina on exposed areas. Old inventory sticker on one panel.Condition
