Pre-Columbian, Maya territories, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 950 CE. An important mold-made pottery bowl displaying a circular base, bulbous body, and annular rim. The body of this lovely vessel is skillfully decorated with a high-relief scene of eight figures engaged in a ballgame. The lively narrative displays five figures facing to their right and the remaining three facing left with a ball between the two frontmost figures of each group. All are elaborately dressed with ornate, collared necklaces, long, straight hair, bird-topped headdresses, and loin cloths decorated with geometric patterns and thick belts, while at least two wear severed heads strapped to their sides. The last figure in each group holds a conch shell, perhaps to musically cheer on the athletes. Size: 6.375" in diameter x 4.25" H (16.2 cm x 10.8 cm)
The Classic Maya Origin Story told in the Popol Vuh describes the ballgame as a contest between humans and underworld deities with the ballcourt representing a portal to the underworld. The Mesoamerican ballgame is the oldest known sport in the Americas. It originated in Southern Mexico approximately 3700 years ago. For many pre-Columbian cultures, such as the Olmec, Maya, Zapotec and Aztec, it was a ritual, political, and social activity that involved the whole population.

Condition
Three collection labels on base. Repairs to rim with some restoration over break lines. Expected abraded area on interior and some softening of detail on exterior commensurate with age. Otherwise, excellent with nice earthen and manganese deposits.
