Western Asia and Siberia, Scythian culture, ca. 6th century BCE. Cast from a single massive piece of bronze, this is a war helmet, classified by B. Z. Rabinovich as a Kuban type after the region of the north Caucasus of the same name. The majority of helmets of this type have been found there. The helmet features a rounded skullcap made to sit tightly on the head. The eye area is cut out with twin half-circle curves forming a raised browline. A thin raised bar travels from the nose to a loop on the top of the head. Ornaments would have been attached to this loop. Around the lower rim are several evenly spaced perforations. These may have been used for attaching additional protection - like leather flaps - or further ornaments. Made to be worn by a Scythian on horseback, armed with a fearsome bow. Size: 7.1" W x 7.5" H (18 cm x 19 cm); 14.9" H (37.8 cm) on included custom stand.
