- Lot Description
Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A rare and fantastic example of a menat, a ceremonial amulet associated with the goddess Hathor, and her priestesses are commonly shown holding the emblem. This example is covered in turquoise-hued glaze and depicts the aegis of Sekhmet comprised of the lioness-headed goddess Sekhmet who peers to the right while donning a large sun disc atop her head. A large wesekh collar adorns the area below her before terminating is a sizable rosette. Also known as a necklace counterpoise, the menat itself was a rattle-like instrument used to please the gods when shaken. In amuletic form, the menat is intended as a symbol of divine protection.
Exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) from 1986 to 1991; in the University of Arizona Museum of Art, October 1993 to December 1993; and in the Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art (RAFFMA), California State University, San Bernardino from 1996 to 2023, reference number EL01.274.1996.
