Ancient Near East / Western Asia, ca. late 2nd to early 1st millennium BCE. A fascinating cast-leaded-copper bull figure that bears a highly stylized human face in place of the typical stocky snout. The human-headed bull stands with a stocky body atop four sturdy legs with notched hooves, has delineated genitalia and a sinuous tail along the hind quarters, and exhibits faint, shallow grooves on the body and neck indicative of hair. The raised ovoid head boasts nicely contoured anthropomorphic features like coffee-bean-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, slightly parted lips, and curled bangs, however the incised shaggy dewlap, protruding triangular ears, and pair of upturned, pointed horns are distinctly bovine in nature. A petite casting hole atop the head illustrates both the hollowness of the figure as well as how it was cast. A wondrous example of human-animal amalgam artistry from the ancient Near East covered in mottled green, russet, and brown patina. Size: 3.7" L x 1.625" W x 4.1" H (9.4 cm x 4.1 cm x 10.4 cm); 5.25" H (13.3 cm) on included custom stand.
