West Africa, Burkina Faso, Bwa peoples, ca. 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden face mask of tall and intriguing form that demonstrates the skill of Bwa artisans. The hemispherical face portion is adorned with enormous eyes surrounded by petite spots of red and white, and the lengthy, beak-like projection is embellished with opposite red and white triangles. Emanating from atop the brow is a titanic, multi-pronged crest with 5 right-angle protuberances that face down towards the expressive visage, and a spindle-shaped finial on top is perhaps evocative of a top knot or hair bun. Masks like this one represent animal spirits who manifest themselves in ceremonies and dances when the masks appear. Size: 13.5" L x 10" W x 48" H (34.3 cm x 25.4 cm x 121.9 cm); 72.5" H (184.2 cm) on included custom stand.
