Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Proto-Maya to Preclassic Maya period, ca. 200 BCE to 250 CE. A charming, mold-formed terracotta vessel depicting a seated simian creature with petite hands resting atop bent knees. The highly burnished zoomorphic vessel has a flat base, a bulbous body with a central discoid medallion, rounded shoulders, a narrow neck, and an enlarged head. The monkey's countenance is defined by hemispherical eyes beneath furrowed brows, a knob-shaped nose above parted lips, and tab-shaped ears. A petite whistle mouthpiece is centered atop the head and produces a high-pitched sound when played. Size: 5.625" W x 8.6" H (14.3 cm x 21.8 cm)

Abrasions to base, body, and head, with light encrustations, and a few small areas of fire-darkening. Nice earthen deposits throughout. Whistle produces high-pitched sound when played. Old inventory number written in black ink beneath base.Condition
