East Africa, Madagascar, Jurassic to Cretaceous Period, ca. 200 to 66 million years ago. A fossilized ammonite shell from the Douvilleiceras genus, known for its distinctive ribbed and bumpy surface. Often called "tractor ammonites" due to their resemblance to the tread patterns on tractor tires, this specimen has undergone significant fossilization changes. During the process, the exterior shell was lost, revealing the intricate suture patterning - the complex, wavy lines where the internal chamber walls met the outer shell. These patterns are not only visually striking but also served to reinforce the shell structure, allowing the ammonite to withstand deep-sea pressures. Size: 8" Diameter x 3.75" W (20.3 cm x 9.5 cm); 10.75" H (27.3 cm) on included custom stand.
