Ancient Seas, North America, Western United States, California, Bakersfield, Temblor Formation (Sharktooth Hill), Middle Miocene period, ca. 15 to 11.6 million years ago. This is a fascinating fossilized mako shark tooth imbedded in a sandstone matrix from the prehistoric seafloor. The matrix is comprised of a portion of what was once the seafloor from a famous formation and fossil site, fittingly known as "Shark Hill." The main piece is a beautiful fossilized shark tooth of Isurus hastalis, the extinct Giant Mako. The white enamel of the tooth points upward from the root that is attached to the sandstone base. The tooth rests against a large fossilized whale bone fragment; predator and prey encased together through the ages! This is a great display and educational fossil to show what the surrounding sediment was like in which these famous fossil shark teeth are found in. Size of matrix: 5.5" L x 4.5" W (14 cm x 11.4 cm); tooth: 1.75" L (4.4 cm)
The predominant fossil shark teeth found at the famous Sharktooth Hill deposits in central California are two types of an extinct mako shark believed to be the ancestor to the present day great white shark; Isurus hastalis, the extinct Giant Mako, and Isurus planus, the Hooked-tooth Mako. The matrices from these formations often include other fossil bones and teeth of fish, sea lion, whales and dolphins of various species.
