- Lot Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi), ca. 1000 to 1100 CE. A fine Black Mesa black-on-white ladle or dipper with a thick columnar handle that consists of 2 pronged upper pieces and a third column fused on the underside. The deep bowl is slipped in a creamy white then painted with 3 bands of black pigments in a bold curvilinear pattern with angular edges. As a ladle, this could hold a large quantity of water and this vessel may have also been used to heat food over a fire. Size: 10" L x 6" Diameter x 3.25" H (25.4 cm x 15.2 cm x 8.3 cm)
Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection, acquired in 2010; ex-Brady collection, found near St. Johns, Arizona, USA
